I’ve never understood the difficulty cigarette smokers have with quitting. I’ve always been able to drop the things with no difficulty- even the past two months, when I was smoking several of them daily- since I broke my leg a week and a half ago, I haven’t had any, and I’m not the least bit bothered by it. My mom and dad both had excruciating difficulty quitting them, and my grandpa died of lung cancer, probably caused by the amount of smoking he did through his life.

Weird.

This picture sucks because it continues to illustrate the false dichotomy of politics. As a libertarian, I’m economically in the ‘right-wing.’ However, Republicans have consistently shown that they don’t advocate free-market policies, yet are still considered ‘right-wing.’ Fascists advocated an explicitly government-in-bed-with-business policy, and they were ‘right-wing.’ This unintentionally lumps in directly opposing ideologies in the same category. So while the thing’s point is clever and valid, it’s method of delivery annoys me. It’s complaining about a lack of political diversity while perpretrating one of the most prominent opponents of political diversity- the simple dichotomy of left vs. right that does so little to actually explain a person’s political leanings.

So tumblr’s been all fucky in Firefox recently. I accidentally got signed out by clicking the ‘settings’ button (fuck if I know why, but it happened), and now I can’t log back in- changed my password three times, and all that ever happens is it takes me to the redirect page, which promptly redirects me to… the login screen- but without any sort of errof message. I had to resort to… *shudders* using Internet Explorer to get on and post this. I’ve checked, my cookies are all enabled in Firefox, and I’ve even re-downloaded Firefox to see if that would fix the problem.

Anyone know what I can do about this or who to contact? Thanks

And, while it’s very hard to gauge just how prevalent female-on-male domestic abuse is (because men are very reluctant to report it for obvious reasons), most figures seem to indicate that around 40% of domestic violence victims are men. That link is to British stats, but American stats are pretty much the same.

It’s very amazing to me that you can easily spot the sexism in viewing women as the child-rearing sex, but are totally oblivious to the sexism of viewing men as less capable caregivers.

I’m actually talking about financial abortion, which is a totally different concept. The woman maintains her rights over her body, but the man exercises his right to give up all responsibility for (and rights to) the child, the same way that a woman can when she chooses to have an abortion or put the baby up for adoption.

i don’t understand suffering? When I was 12, my parents were both sent to jail. When I was 15, my stepfather became addicted to meth and started abusing our family. When I was 22 my father died of a heart attack. I was the one to pull the plug on his respirator. I understand suffering.

I am not a misogynist. I have a history of standing up for women and women’s rights, including being a vigorous defender of their right to serve in the military and their right to abortions (including for teenage girls without the need of a parental consent form). I also support longer maternity leaves, ending female circumcision globally, etc. If you’re so fucking stupid that you can’t defeat my arguments without strawmanning my position, then don’t bother making an attempt. Right now, if we tie gold to the dollar, there won’t be nearly enough gold to adequately represent all the money in circulation- it’s far too sudden a change.

Second, advocating fiat money doesn’t mean believing printing money out of thin air is good- money is only as good as the people’s confidence in it. As long as the people believe the little paper thing we call a dollar bill is valuable, it will function as money. Even if it’s tied to gold, the value of gold is only as good as the confidence we have in the value of gold. We’re in our debt crisis because the fiat system got abused, not because the fiat system is inherently flawed. It’s up to the populace to elect people who won’t abuse the fiat currency- when we don’t, we have no one to blame but ourselves for the current debt crisis.

Interestingly to me, the conservative/liberal paradigm in today’s situation is almost the opposite of what those terms mean in the non-political sense.

The ‘conservatives’ are calling for drastic changes to the way things are currently being done- instead of conserving the current system.

The ‘liberals’ are fighting those drastic changes with all their might- instead of saying ‘Hey, the old way of doing things isn’t working, let’s try something else.’

So right now the Republican frontrunners are Mitt Romney, who wrote the unofficial first draft of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, Newt Gingrich, who benefited from the massive bailouts, and basically says whatever he’s being paid to say at any given time, and Ron Paul.

The guy’s no saint, but if I have to choose between the two crooked politicians and the one guy who consistently does what he says, even if some of what he says is downright dumb (jizz + egg does not immediately equal life, First Amendment does in fact separate church and state, gold standard is a terrible idea)… Besides, the President isn’t a monarch, if he really tries to do something too crazy, the crooked Congress’ll override him.
